What is Prostatitis?

Prostate infections (a.k.a. prostatitis) are the leading urinary tract problem for men under the age of 50 and the third most common for those over the age of 50.

Understand more about prostate health and BPH with this informative video.

There are two ways the prostate can become infected: due to a bacterial infection or a microorganism. Prostatitis occurs when the infection is passed from the urethra (the tube from which urine and semen leave the body) to the prostate, which is a walnut-sized gland that surrounds the urethra.

Acute bacterial prostatitis and chronic prostatitis generally have the same symptoms which include lower back pain, pelvic pain, difficulties with urination, and pain when urinating. Acute bacterial prostatitis comes on suddenly but can be treated effectively with antibiotics. Chronic prostatitis develops over a much longer period of time and can often take years before it fully goes away, but the symptoms can be controlled with lifestyle changes.
