Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also called benign prostatic hypertrophy or enlarged prostate, is a disease that affects men. Due to BPH, the vast majority of sufferers develop an abnormal enlargement of the prostate, which affects the urinary and reproductive systems.
Apart from being a really uncomfortable and inconvenient disease, there are some other things you should know about BPH. Check out this list of nine things we’ve put together to help you learn more about this condition:
1. The causes for the development of BPH are not fully understood.
2. It’s not a severe disease, although it’s uncomfortable and inconvenient.
3. About half of men older than 75 experience symptoms of BPH.
4. Most men don’t experience any symptoms.
5. Symptoms may include urinary abnormal frequency, urinary urgency, difficulty initiating the urinary stream, among others.
6. To get a correct diagnosis, physicians need a recent familial and medical history, and a complete physical examination.
7. Depending on the patients’ age, physical condition, the severity of BPH and symptoms experienced, physicians may opt to treat the disease with lifestyle changes, medications, minimally invasive procedures, surgery or a combination of treatments.
8. The most common type of surgery is TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate).
9. If not treated, BPH may result in acute urinary retention, chronic or long-lasting urinary retention, blood in the urine, urinary tract infections (UTIs), bladder damage, kidney damage, or bladder stones.
