Prostatitis is a disease that affects men’s reproductive and urinary systems due to an inflammation or infection in the prostate. It is a painful disease that attacks the prostate — a walnut-shaped gland, located around the urethra at the neck of the bladder and in front of the rectum — which produces a fluid which combines with semen and is crucial for men’s fertility. Prostatitis can be developed by men at any age or race and it affects 10 to 15 percent of the U.S. male population, according to the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDKD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
