Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: What is the Prostate?

bph_prostate

According to the NIH, here’s what the prostate is. The prostate is a gland shaped like a walnut and it’s part of the male reproductive system. The prostate gland’s most important role is to make the fluid which goes into semen, which is essential for a man’s fertility. The urethra is surrounded by this gland at the neck of the bladder – where the urethra joins the bladder. There are two or more lobes enclosed by an outer layer of tissue on the prostate gland, and it’s located in front of the rectum, right below the bladder. The urethra is the tube through which the urine gets carried from the bladder to the outside of the body; it also carries semen out through the penis.
