Medication is one of the treatment options for patients diagnosed with benign prostatic hypertension (BPH) and tamsulosin is one of the drugs used. In this video, the mechanism of action of tamsulosin is explained. An oral drug, tamsulosin is used for the treatment of difficulty in urinating, one of the symptoms related to BPH.

Tamsulosin has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and it is commercialized under the brand name Flomax. It works by blocking the effects of adrenalin, a chemical released by the alpha adrenergic nerves that provoke a tightening of the muscle cells, which causes difficulties in urinating and retention of urine in the bladder. By making the muscles relax, tamsulosin decreases the obstruction of the urine flow and improves BPH patients’ symptoms.
