The Urology Care Foundation (UCF) is a certified organization focused on advancing research and education in the medical field of urology. The foundation has been working for almost 30 years to fight diseases that affect the urinary system, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). But how did it all start and how can patients who suffer from BPH benefit from its work?
Founded in 1987, the Urology Care Foundation is the official foundation of the American Urological Association (AUA) and maintains a unique relationship with it. The two organizations work together with the same purpose, as the American Urological Association holds over 21,000 members and the Urology Care Foundation has become a leading advocate in urologic health, uniquely qualified to speak on behalf of urology.
The relationship between the American Urological Association and the Urology Care Foundation had begun even before the foundation of the latter. In 1975, the association funded its first two research scholars and planted the seed for something else. Twelve years later, the need for an administrating entity that was responsible for the Research Scholars Program led to the creation of the American Foundation for Urologic Disease (AFUD), which was later turned into the Urology Care Foundation as currently known.
One of the main areas undertaken by the Urology Care Foundation regarding research through its Research Scholars Program was helping to increase understanding of diseases such as BPH, as well as improve treatment and patients’ quality of life. “We strive to support urologic research and to be the top provider of up-to-date, accurate urologic health information for patients and the public,” explains the Urology Care Foundation.
In addition to research, these institutions are also focused on increasing understanding of urological diseases and offering support to the patients. In 2003, the American Urological Association launched the website www.UrologyHealth.org, and two years later the AFUD turned into the AUA Foundation, but it was only in 2012 that the name Urology Care Foundation was approved by the Board of Directors.
Patients who suffer from BPH may find it helpful to seek information about the development and function of the disease, as well as treatment options, potential side effects, and other recommendations about maintaining the health of the prostate through the Urology Care Foundation. The foundation also makes resources for public education available, including patient education materials, raising awareness campaigns, and patient advocacy partnerships.
