After a diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), there are many treatment options. In the case of mild symptoms, doctors may recommend addressing the disease through lifestyle changes and regular examinations. The National Institutes of Health recommends “reducing intake of liquids, particularly before going out in public or before periods of sleep, [and] avoiding or reducing intake of caffeinated beverages and alcohol.” Avoiding the use of certain medicines such as decongestants, antihistamines, antidepressants, and diuretics, as well as training the bladder to hold more urine for longer periods, exercising pelvic floor muscles and preventing or treating constipation is also thought to help reduce the BPH symptoms.
