Natural Remedies for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia: Saw Palmetto

In this video webcast shared in March 2012, Dr. James Meschino talks about natural supplements which can help with the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

A study finds that male baldness may be an early warning sign of BPH in later years. Find out more.

Meschino talks about the supplement saw palmetto, which comes from low-growing palm trees in the West Indies. The berries of the saw palmetto plant have been found to be beneficial to men who suffer from enlarged prostate or BPH as they contain fatty acids and prosterols that can help to reduce the size of the prostate.

Saw palmetto works by blocking some of the hormones responsible for the growth of the prostate gland. In particular, it blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT and also stops estrogen from entering the prostate gland, which causes growth.

Prosterol appears effective in reducing BPH-related enzymes according to a study. Find out more.
