How Professionals Characterize BPH

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) also goes by the descriptions of enlarged prostate and prostatic hypertrophy. It’s a common condition that mainly affects older men and while it’s not life-threatening, it can cause a lot of discomfort and inconvenience.

Read our list of eight important things to know about the prostate.

The prostate is a gland that’s about the size of a walnut and is responsible for producing the seminal fluid that mixes with sperm on ejaculation. As men age, the prostate continues to grow putting pressure on the surrounding urethra. The pressure causes problems with urination urgency, frequency, trouble starting the flow, dribbling towards the end of the stream, and pain when urinating.

There are many different types of treatments available for BPH including medications, non-invasive procedures and surgery. Some doctors may advise lifestyle changes for those who only suffer from a mild case.
