BPH Post-TURP Irrigation Can Be Controlled by New Device

A team of Chinese researchers has developed a device which can improve control of bladder flow rate when a patient has a continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) procedure for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Find out about the different treatment options for BPH.

Continuous bladder irrigation is a procedure often used following prostate surgery such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) to empty the bladder and eliminate blood clots.

The new device can automatically regulate flow rate from the bladder without a healthcare professional having to monitor it. This will hopefully lead to fewer complications for patients undergoing these routine procedures.

A trial for the device featured 146 men divided into two equal groups. The first group underwent the usual continuous bladder irrigation overseen by nurses and the second group used the automatic bladder irrigation system. Results showed that the automatic irrigation caused less retention of blood clots and painful post-op bladder contractions than the traditional method. Read more about this device here.
