Bernie’s Story: A Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Patient

It is well regarded that almost every man will suffer from prostate problems at some point in their lives. One of the most common prostate problems is non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

But how do you know if you have BPH? Here’s a list of enlarged prostate symptoms.

Enlargement of the prostate means that the prostate gland gets bigger, causing a blockage of the urine flow. Since the prostate is located just below the bladder and surrounding the urethra, its enlargement can restrict the flow of urine from the bladder. As a result, men have difficulties in urinating, can’t fully empty their bladder, and always feel the urge to run to the bathroom. As a man gets older, his prostate continues to grow larger, which can sometimes cause problems.

In this video from Advancing Quality Alliance AQuA, meet Bernie. He was diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). “Symptoms due to BPH are thought to affect one-third of men aged over 50 in the UK. In this clip, he discusses his options for treatment with his GP using Shared Decision Making.”
