6. Sexual dysfunction

Following surgery for an enlarged prostate, some men report a loss of sexual function in the short term. In many cases, any sexual dysfunction is mental rather than physical and talking with your doctor can help. Erectile dysfunction is more likely to occur if it was present before the surgery, as it’s rare for the surgery itself to cause it.

Another issue men may face is retrograde ejaculation, where the semen flows backward into the bladder. This can be controlled with medications. Some men may suffer infertility following BPH surgery, but this is incredibly rare.
